Sacrifice by Elton John

It's a human sign
When things go wrong
When the scent of her lingers
And temptation's strong
Into the boundary
Of each married man
Sweet deceit comes calling
And negativity lands
Cold cold heart
Hard done by you
Some things look better baby
Just passing through
And it's no sacrifice
Just a simple word
It's two hearts living
In two separate worlds
But it's no sacrifice
No sacrifice
It's no sacrifice at all
Mutual misunderstanding
After the fact
Sensitivity builds a prison
In the final act
We lose direction
No stone unturned
No tears to damn you
When jealousy burns

It is interesting how Elton John captures the difficulty of marriage in staying chaste and lauding it above the easy "passing through" as no sacrifice. Sensitivity builds a prison... I think that he is talking about the trust relationship being shattered and the spouses closing themselves off from each other, a prison that is built in the final act... maybe refering to the illict act? Maybe the physical in general? Hmm.

I'm not entirely sure about the last four lines. Maybe it is the search for evidence of an affair and the knowledge unevidenced. Maybe it is the reaction of the spouse to the one who was the object of the illict relationship.

Whew! See, I count this as awesome evidence of the power of the theology of the body. Sadly it is too removed for most people to use as a hard case. But it seem that the vast amount of this type of evidence would be enough to show for something.

Ahh well.
